The Joy Formidable is a Welsh alternative rock trio formed in 2007 by singer/guitarist Ritzy Bryan and bassist Rhydian Dafydd, joined by drummer Matt Thomas. The band is known for its "primal epic grunge rock" sound, drawing comparisons to The Breeders, Arcade Fire, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. They released their debut album, The Big Roar, in 2011 and have since released several more studio albums, including Wolf's Law and Into the Blue, their fifth album in 2021

Shy Western is the solo project of Ritzy Bryan (The Joy Formidable). Her debut album and companion book Hugger arrive in January 2026 - a collection that blends music, stories, and science-inspired reflections on our connection with the natural world. Self-produced and deeply personal, it shows a new side of Bryan’s songwriting: intimate, playful, and rooted in the beauty of the wild.
