The performance consists of a live off-the-floor real-time Jazz trio (Drums, Grand Piano, Bass) performing the greatest Christmas album of all time (or at least we think so), and definitely the second best-selling Jazz album of all time- that is official. Millions of people have grown up watching and listening to A Charlie Brown Christmas on TV over the decades, and the Christmas special has touched many generations. A through line for so many families, a time stamp as each year has moved us from children to teens, then from adults and parents to grandparents. What few people know is that this classic almost never made it to air. At every turn, the "suits" wanted to shut it down; one big reason was that they thought this "Jazz" music was awful (joke's on them!).
This live performance was originally conceived by Jerry Granelli with his trio as "Tales of A Charlie Brown Christmas", a way to tell the behind-the-scenes story of how this Christmas Classic came together and went to air over fifty years ago, and in the process, perform the music the way Jerry and Vince used to play it in the clubs around San Francisco in the 60s. The show included 5 short clips from the original TV special, but most of the evening was all about the Trio performing the soundtrack. Now his son, J. Anthony Granelli, takes his own trio on this incredible journey along with the audience. Where there used to be a choir, the audience is now brought in as active participants, singing along to this now classic soundtrack.
The show runs a little over an hour.
